Assistant Professor

Annique Claringbould · Principal Investigator

Annique Claringbould is interested in researching the changes in gene regulation and gene expression that underlie complex diseases. She joined the Department of Internal Medicine at Erasmus Medical Center in July 2024. During her PhD at the University Medical Centre in Groningen, Annique studied how genetic variants affect gene expression using large population cohort data. She then pursued postdoctoral research at the European Molecular Biology Laboratories in Heidelberg, Germany, focusing on single-cell gene regulatory networks and multiomics approaches.

PhD Student

May Krause · PhD Student

May Krause joined our research group in May 2025, after completing her master’s at the University of Cape Town. She is investigating the gene regulatory mechanisms that underlie type 2 diabetes, focusing on linking polygenic risk to β-cell regulatory circuitry at single-cell resolution, using iPSC-derived pancreatic cells combined with chromatin accessibility and gene expression profiling to identify transcription factors and gene regulatory networks involved in T2D risk.

PhD Student

Caiwei Tan · PhD Student

Caiwei Tan is a PhD student whose current work focuses on integrating rare variant functional effects with common-variant polygenic risk to improve personalised cardiovascular risk assessment in familial hypercholesterolaemia. She has a background in health data science, biostatistics, and nutrition science, and her broader interests include statistical genetics, real-world health data, and epidemiology.
